Oaxaca

The culinary and cultural epicenter of Mexico

Experience Mexico and its Ancient Culture

Oaxaca, located in southern Mexico and bordered by the Pacific Ocean, is one of the country’s most culturally diverse regions, with a history dating back to 11,000 BC. This is where corn and squash were first cultivated, and where mezcal, Mexico’s iconic spirit, has its origins. The state is also home to Monte Albán, a remarkably preserved pre-Hispanic archaeological site whose temples were spared during Spanish colonization. Oaxaca’s artisanal heritage is renowned, celebrated for distinctive crafts like alebrijes (colorful folk art sculptures), burnished black clay pottery, and handwoven wool rugs, each piece reflecting deep-rooted traditions.

Your journey will take place in Oaxaca de Juárez, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the cultural, historical, and culinary heart of the state. Here, you’ll experience Oaxaca’s vibrant daily life, sample celebrated local dishes, and witness the passion of its people for lively festivals and celebrations. The natural wonders are equally compelling, with excursions to sites like Hierve el Agua, one of the world’s only two petrified waterfalls, and Monte Albán.

Stay in Oaxaca de Juárez for a week or more - it takes that long to really feel a part of the deep history, colonial architecture and culture. Day trips bring you to Monte Albán, Hierve el Agua, Teotitlán del Valle, San Bartolo Coyotepec, the lake region of Huayápam, Mitla, and beyond, each destination offering a deeper look into the region’s exceptional landscape and heritage.
